Ayurveda's view of Your Moon CycleBy Brenda Mitchell Posted 26-Oct-2017

GO BACK TO ARTICLES

In our society, we feel that we should suffer through our menstrual or moon cycle, eating chocolate and using hot water bottles to ease the cramps. We are made to feel this is something to hide and we are not encouraged to embrace this cleansing. This is in fact, our body’s way to prepare to become a woman, to prepare for pregnancy and to cleanse if there is not a child. Our cycle is unique to our own bodies and we cannot necessarily compare it with others. For some women, we can have a 28-day cycle like clockwork, others will have 25 days or they may be irregular. Yoga and the Ayurveda lifestyle can help with the symptoms if you have any and to tune in with your body. Here are my top tips:

1. Be kind to yourself. If you need to rest, take the time. If you feel fine, allow yourself to do what is right for you. Your cycle is different and your body will guide you.

2. Get some quality rest and sleep to allow your body to recover. Early to bed and early to rise will make all the difference to your overall feeling of wellness.

3. Eat whole foods with no processed products or refined sugars. Food can make an extreme difference to how we feel physically and emotionally. You may think you want the chocolate, but how do you really feel after you have it. Instead treat yourself to some fresh, sweet berries and a small amount of cream.

4. Practice Abhyanga or self-massage. By practicing massage with oils regularly, we can connect with our bodies, notice any changes and allow our muscles to relax. Self-compassion and mindfulness meditation practices are especially helpful at these times.

5. Yoga asana are a great way to make our body feel amazing at any time and this is no exception. Try poses such as: Legs up the wall, cat / cow, child and hip opening asana such as butterfly hips. Anything that twists the abdomen gently will also be gratefully accepted by your body. Try lying, sitting or standing asana depending on how you feel that day.

Our human body is precious. Remember to love and accept who you are and this beautiful body that you have. Accept that sometimes it is uncomfortable and allow yourself to feel the pain if needed. If extreme, always see your doctor, however the steps above should help with minor symptoms. Celebrate your womanhood
